Is online backup safe?

Question: Is online backup services safe? Do they backup my data? Are they allowed to look through my data?

Answer: Online backup is very safe, especially if you use a company that has a good history. But any other will do the job. Online backup services do backup another copy of your data encase their hard drive breaks down. But when you stop using their service any more, it is sure that they will delete all of your data. Online backup service staff are not allowed to browse through your data. This is against your own privacy.

But is is very important to read the terms and conditions and the FAQ before using a service. Some online backup services that I recommend are: Mozy, Carbonite, XDrive and Box.net. Of course there are plenty more of these online backup services. Just type ‘online backup’ in any search engine and you will be flooded with results!

Attention: I will be writing a companion guide series about online backup and storage after I finish the security guide series. So stay tuned!

I’m the CEO of Carbonite. The things to watch out for are 1) are the files encrypted before they leave your PC?, 2) is the data transmitted via SSL, and 3) how does the service protect your password. Generally backup services that also offer photo sharing, file sharing, and the like have a lot more security risks than those that don’t since they have to unencrypt the data on their servers before sending it out over the Internet. If you’re doing a lot of photo or file sharing, it might be better to use a different service for that function (such as Flickr) and something else just to do straight backup. You should think of backup like insurance — something there when you need it but otherwise it’s out of sight.
