Delete your free Hotmail account

Question: How can I delete my free Hotmail account?(New version: Windows Live Hotmail)

Solution: You can delete your Hotmail account through two ways:
1)If you have made up your mind and definitely want your account deleted, please click on this link – ‘Delete Hotmail Account‘. But before clicking on the link, remember to log in first. Once directed to that page, click on ‘Close Account’ and follow the screen instructions.

2) This is another way to delete your account, but a very slow one. For the new version of Hotmail (With the new interface), there is a time-out period of 120days. If you do not sign-in for another 90 days added onto the 120 days (Which equals a total of 210 days), your account will be permanently deleted. So you could just not use/log-in to your account for 210 days your account will be permanently deleted.

How do I remove or get rid of Hotmail Live and get back to my Old Hotmail account?

    • 2. bla bla bla  |  April 14, 2010 at 3:18 pm

you can’t get you’re old one back because you might have not used for a long time and it automatically got deleted

  • 3. 88michael  |  September 16, 2007 at 5:59 am

Unfortunately, you can not go back to the original MSN Hotmail. Microsoft has dumped that and the only two choices you have are the full version of Windows Live Hotmail or the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail. There is not much difference between the full version and classic version of Windows Live Hotmail. The classic version is not MSN Hotmail, it is still Windows Live Hotmail with the new user-interface.

Most of the MSN services will be changing to Windows Live with the new interface (green and blue) except for a few entertainment services such as MSN soapbox.
Two other free email services I would look at are Gmail from Google and Yahoo Mail from Yahoo. But probably Yahoo is the best.

I was wondering if you could help answer a question for me? Last year (approximately 8 months ago, I had a hotmail account that I deleted – I did this by following the steps on the help menu and a message came up saying that my hotmail account has been marked for deletion within the next few days and that after 120 days my account will be permanently deleted and my email address will be made available to other users. I also did some research on this and found the following: “Accounts that are not accessed through the Hotmail website ( at least once in a period of 30 days are marked as inactive. When an account becomes inactive, all e-mail messages and personal folders are deleted. If the account remains inactive for 60 more days, the Contacts list is deleted as well. If you are unable to reactivate the account for a total of 120 days, the e-mail account is permanently deleted from our system.” I also found that if the account is not deleted but inactive for 120 days the messages, folders and contacts are deleted and then after a further 90 days the account may be permanently deleted and the address made available again (ie 210 days). For live accounts this 365 days. My question to you is then, if I have no idea what my password was and now want to use my old address again, why has it not become available again as it is over 230 days since the account’s deletion by me? Do deleted accounts frequently take longer than the 120 days to be permanently deleted? If so, how long could it take and will all deleted accounts eventually be permanently deleted?

  • 15. 88michael  |  June 26, 2008 at 12:31 pm

@why can’t i access my junkbox – Try deleting/empyting your browser’s cache and cookies. This is usually the problem. In internet explorer 7, go to tools and delete browsing history. For Firefox, click Tools and then clear private data. If this doesn’t work, see if you have any addons such as an ad blocker that is causing the problem.

  • thank you

  • 17. Kita  |  July 24, 2008 at 10:50 am

Why is it that we have to wait 120 days just for the stinkin account to delete i mean like thats baaaaaare long to wait for, and obviously one day ill go into the account and see if it still on, but like i just dont get why we have to wait so long? why cant it do it in like 7days, muchhhh easier you knoww

  • 18. 88michael  |  July 25, 2008 at 8:03 am

@Kita – There is an option to pass the 120 days by using the link I have provided above.
But to answer your question, the 120 day period is for people who are on holidays or something like that. There is no option to first delete your account and then wait 120 days. It’s just 120 of no activity and your account is deleted.

  • 25.  |  October 6, 2008 at 3:05 am

I think it is important to cover the whole positive aspect of taking off or deleting a hotmail account until I can get my mail somewhere else. It is not my email that is easy to access but it was when I started using that I was finagled into the screen with the take it off message. When the hotmail e-mail address gets off I will find something else to communicate with, my friends and family will love it.
If only the mail was warm and friendly in return! As for Ali, it is not why or how but when it does come off it will be.

I forgot my Password, and when I went to change it I could only go to the new version. Thus I lost all of my old files.

  • 27. 88michael  |  October 14, 2008 at 5:58 am

@Ron Richmond – You mean all your mail are lost due to switch to the new version of Hotmail? That’s really strange. In that case, contact Windows Live Support.

The hotmail acc i have used for the last 10 years has been hi jacked by my ex woman. She has observed the password, then changed it. She is using it maliciously. I wish to close it. However i dont recall the security details after 10 years.

This is a new acc recently opened.

How can i close my old acc. without acessing it.

  • 31. 88michael  |  November 3, 2008 at 10:54 pm

@ MARY – Try using to access your hotmail account via a few different browsers. Always make sure you have the latest version. You can also try to link the account to Outlook or any other email client to get the mail located in the junk folder. Or try contacting the Windows Live Team for further help.

@Rob Watson – Unfortunately, I cannot help you here.

I have deleted my account almost a year ago, i have never accessed it since then.
But yesterday by curiosity i logged in using the same old password & it worked! The only different thing was an empty inbox & a welcome email from msn staff.
Can anyone please explain to me how is this possible? I thought after one year the account will either be taken by someone else or available but needs new registration, not just using my old password & it opens!
    appreciate any prompt feedback

How do I get my junkmail back in my hotmail account?

      • 37. 88michael  |  May 7, 2009 at 10:46 am

@Marietta G Smith – You can simply select an item/s in the junk mail inbox and click “Not Junk”.

  • 38. 88michael  |  March 6, 2009 at 7:56 am

@rj – That’s quite odd. Are you sure that you really deleted it? Prior to the transition of Windows Live Hotmail, it was pretty hard to delete a Hotmail account, or at least to permanently delete it.

@Toby – Have tried to open your mail in another web browser? If not, try that. Other wise, contact the Windows Live support team (not faq/help guide but actually email them)

Try to open your email in another web browser. Some possible ones you can try are IE8, Firefox 3 and Google Chrome.
Also, try clearing your cache and cookies.

i want this account and my windows live account deleted because they keep being hacked. when i try to close the account i keep getting error messages. i have sent numerous emails and no responses. what do i do?

    • 42. 88michael  |  May 13, 2009 at 6:38 am

@jessica – how can your account get constantly hacked? Have you got a strong password and check that you don’t have spyware on your computer. If you’ve tried the instructions above and they do not work, then export your emails and transfer them to another account and simply not use that account so it will expire.

    • 48. 88michael  |  January 1, 2010 at 2:23 am

Unfortunately I don’t think you can do much about that. Now that the person has your password, it’s like it’s his/her account. You can try contacting Hotmail about this but I doubt you will get a helpful response.
