How to Uninstall an addon in Firefox
September 17, 2007
Question: How do I uninstall an add-on in Firefox?
Answer: You can uninstall an add-on in Firefox by doing the following:
1) Click on ‘Tools‘ located in the top menu bar of Firefox.
2) In the drop-down menu, click ‘Add-on‘.
3) In the small pop-up window, click on the add-on on you want to uninstall and then click on the ‘Uninstall‘ button.
Note: You will need to restart Firefox to complete the process. (if you just want to pause/stop the add-on for a while, please click on ‘Disable‘ rather than ‘Uninstall’.

And what if the add-on grays-out the Uninstall button so you can’t click it (disabled or not)?? For instance, RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin. The bastards..

If the Uninstall button grays out, then it is just one of those worst scenarios. There should be a way to manually delete the plugin via Windows Explorer or you can reinstall Firefox. I will update the post.

You could first try to uninstall the addon in Firefox Safe Mode. I previously had your problem and I managed to uninstall it in safe mode. Also, before doing this, please make sure that you restart Firefox (don’t click the cancel button of your Addons pop-up window) exit it by clicking on the X – how you normally close a window.
If this problem still occurs, please let me know and I will help you to uninstall it manually or another and probably the best is to reinstall firefox.

HELP!!!! I have done it all – spent the entire weekend. If I reinstall Firefox will I lose my bookmarks? what a mess!

@Helene – Firefox managed to restore all my bookmarks when I reinstalled. But to me sure, export your bookmarks (using the built in exporting tool in Firefox bookmarks). And import those bookmarks when you reinstall Firefox (using the built in importing tool in Firefox bookmarks). If Firefox managed to restore your bookmarks automatically then you won’t need to import.

This doesn’t work with the abysmal ThinkVantage Password Manager Firefox add-on. It’s a bit of cruft Leveno Thinkpad owners find forced upon them if they install Firefox before uninstalling all the Leveno related “Password manager” and “Security Center” crap. It’s installed in Firefox and whole you can “disable” it there’s no uninstall button. Apparently leveno engineers didn’t think Firefox users should have the option to unistal their garbage.

[...] And click Continue in Safe Mode, your FireFox browser should be opened again. Now you can proceed to the normal procedure of "disable add-ons in FireFox" (the following steps copied from How to Uninstall an addon in Firefox) [...]

@Anthony – What do you by unusable for you? Installing too many addons is not a good idea. The best way to solve these issues is to reinstall the browser.
